Well I mean they have points. If these guys were on a lunch break why would they be taking a customers car? They should be taking their own. And if they weren’t on a lunch break and just out on a test drive why would they be committing time theft by getting food on the clock?

I get the whole killing two birds argument but businesses take time theft seriously. I mean sure the worst that happened in this story is some chalupa crumbs in the console but if they had gotten in a wreck this story would have been much worse.

That said it’s your opinion

I agree with you 100%. I don’t understand why everyone is getting so butthurt over this.

It was a freaking mile extra then the recommended test drive zone and it may have required a test drive to make sure the problem wasn't coming back up.

Do we know what the 350 was in the shop for?

If they were trying to replicate the issue, or trying to find that “ratta-tatta-rattabojiggity” sound the owner made with his mouth trying, or seeing if the cleared check-engine light retunred, then fine. Drive it seven miles instead of four and save time by getting lunch.

If it was in for an oil change or to fix something completey unrelated to driving the vehicle, like fixing that retarded headlamp, then they may have some ‘splainin’ to do.

Do we know? I hope they were on a joy ride, since they were fired. I would hate to see two guys lose their job because News 7 is outside. That would be shitty thing to do.

All I know is there was a conversation between two unemployed mechanics that went, “I wanted to go to Burger King, but nooooooooo, you had to have Taco Bell today. Fuck you, and fuck your Taco Bell coupons. This is all your fault. ”

If there was such a thing as a Thread Of The Day award I think yours would have won it easily!

I think some Youtube commenters have migrated over..

You do not disappoint. This is the best comment so far and I totally agree.

Going by the image in the article and that the owner works at Taco Bell? I’m guessing it was in the shop because one headlight was dimmer than the other.

One thing I love is so many of the gray comments are just fuming with rage and supremely pissed and they’re just sitting there waiting to be noticed.

Oh, I love those guys. I won’t dismiss a Grey unless it’s vulgar. You know they’re coming back to that comment every five minutes hoping it’s in the black.

Nope! Sorry.. You get to fester there kiddo!

Apparently it was in for a nebulous request to ‘have the suspension checked’ since it was ‘wrecked last year’ and was ‘driving weird’ according to one of the videos.

...then was this a shake-down test? Driving to identify the problem?

I’d be pissed, but for a different reason: no food/drinks in my car. Groceries are the only exception.

Don’t know just a 3 minute vid, but that’s what I’d guess. The dude was being totally unreasonable in the video...he got them to replace all the wreck damage for free because they drove through a Taco Bell.

I’d be slightly annoyed if someone took my car through a drive-thru on a test drive but like 10% off or something is a reasonable request...this guy got 3k in parts in labor and said he’s still not happy...I lost all sympathy for him.

Time theft? We don’t get paid specifically for road testing unless it’s extended road testing for diagnostic purposes. We get paid for the job and then road test to verify good work, if the work can be verified without driving then we more than likely won’t drive it.

Maybe that dealer has off-site parking for employees that is a few miles away (mine does). And maybe the shuttle driver was AWOL. Though if this is the case they should have used a company vehicle.

Maybe they just were trying to be efficient. Whatever. It’s never acceptable to use a customer’s car for personal errands. But without knowing more information it looks like firing was to strong of a reaction.

Well some of us go to the FP about once every three months. And comment there even less. Going over there and reading comments is usually a painful waste of time so I never bother.

He works at taco bell. Probably can barely afford his car payment let alone a few grand in repairs. That is probably why he has been bitching so much.

If the mechanics were out for a test drive, and combining a lunch run was common practice, I think this is bullshit, and the dealership are run by a bunch of pussies.

It that’s the case, they should have explained to the kid that they were authorized to test drive the car and decided to use it to get lunch in order to get him his car back faster. It was not a joy ride, and that his car is ready for him to come get it and take it somewhere else for service.

You and I have occasionally bumped heads once or twice on the FP. I don’t see any holes in your logic. Based on the info given, you really cannot say for sure if what these guys did was wrong.

I mean, if they were on break and decided to take a customer car to lunch instead of their own? Then yeah, fuck that.

But if they were not abusing the clock and were just grabbing lunch to take back to the shop, it shouldn’t be a big deal.

I wasn’t so much trying to say that what they did was 100% kosher. Just that it seemed like a huge overreaction especially on the owner’s part. Did you watch the video with him?

Nope, although apparently he sounded like a jackass. I wouldn’t have raised a stink myself..unless there was even a bit of evidence of wrong doing. They likely didn’t do anything wrong, but you don’t really know. I would’ve worried about mistreatment too. But I’ve been burned by a milkshake spilling tech. (Wont be going back)
